Portugal Plans Summer Law to Tackle Illegal Online Gambling
Portugal is preparing new legislation aimed at making it harder for illegal gambling operators to reach local players. The government plans to introduce the measures this summer as part of a broader effort to strengthen the regulated market.
The proposal focuses on reducing access to unlicensed gambling websites and improving enforcement against operators that target Portuguese consumers without a local licence.
Authorities also want to strengthen cooperation between regulators, internet service providers and payment companies to make it easier to block illegal platforms and disrupt their operations.
The planned changes come as regulators across Europe continue to tighten their approach to the black market. Several countries have recently introduced tougher rules on gambling advertising, payment blocking and consumer protection.
Portugal already has a regulated online gambling market, but offshore operators continue to attract players despite enforcement efforts. Officials believe additional legal tools are needed to reduce the visibility of illegal websites and encourage consumers to use licensed operators instead.
The government is expected to present the legislation during the summer, with further details on enforcement measures and implementation to follow once the proposal is officially published.
