Online Gambling Drives Growth in Danish Market

Online gambling continues to dominate growth in Denmark’s gaming market, according to the latest figures published by the national regulator Spillemyndigheden for April 2026.
Total gambling expenditure reached DKK 680m (£78.5m), marking a 2.3% increase compared to the same period in 2025. The data shows a clear shift in consumer behaviour, with online gambling emerging as the strongest-performing segment across the sector.
Online gambling accounted for DKK 392m in April, recording an 18.4% year-on-year increase. This made it the fastest-growing vertical in the Danish market, significantly outperforming all other gambling categories.
Land-based bingo also showed notable growth, rising by 17% year-on-year, although it remains the smallest segment with just DKK 3m in monthly revenue. Slot machines and gaming machines experienced more moderate growth of 2.8%, generating DKK 96m.
In contrast, land-based casinos saw a decline of 8.3% year-on-year, reflecting a continued shift away from physical gambling venues toward digital platforms.
Betting activity presented a different trend. Revenues from sports wagering fell by 22.5% year-on-year to DKK 161m. Analysts suggest the decline may be linked to a quieter sporting calendar or reduced engagement from Danish football fans following the national team’s failure to qualify for the World Cup.
Despite the drop in betting activity, the overall market trend remains positive, driven mainly by the rapid expansion of online gambling services.
At the same time, Danish authorities are preparing stricter regulations on gambling advertising during live sports broadcasts. The proposed measures could significantly limit marketing opportunities for operators, particularly during major international events such as the World Cup.
