The Dutch gambling regulator has warned licensed operators that it will closely monitor betting ads and promotions during the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Kansspelautoriteit, also known as the KSA, sent a letter to gambling license holders in the Netherlands to remind them of the rules that apply to advertising and betting offers. The regulator said it will be extra alert during the tournament, when betting activity is expected to increase.

The KSA pointed to several existing restrictions, including the ban on untargeted gambling advertising introduced in 2023 and the ban on sports sponsorship by gambling companies that came into force last year. Operators were also reminded that not all football betting markets are allowed in the Netherlands. Bets on yellow cards or the first corner kick, for example, are prohibited.

The regulator said it will take immediate action if operators break the rules. Last year, Unibet was fined €450,000 for offering unauthorized sports bets, including wagers on corner kicks, yellow cards, and matches involving players under the age of 21.

The KSA also said it will pay close attention to illegal betting operators and ads promoting unlicensed gambling offers during the World Cup.

KSA chairman Michel Groothuizen said betting increased during the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024, making major tournaments attractive for gambling companies. He urged operators to protect young adults and vulnerable groups, warning that violations will lead to quick enforcement action.
