Australian Gambling Reform Bill Faces Parliamentary Opposition
Australia’s government has introduced the Interactive Gambling Amendment Bill 2026 to parliament, opening the formal debate over a package of new gambling restrictions.
The legislation was tabled on 2 July and includes measures previously announced by the government. However, opposition parties, independent MPs and the Greens have already argued that the proposals do not go far enough to reduce gambling-related harm.
The bill would ban wagering advertisements during live sports broadcasts and introduce tighter controls on gambling marketing across television, radio and online platforms. It would also prohibit online keno and foreign matched lottery products.
Additional measures include strengthening the BetStop national self-exclusion register and expanding enforcement powers against illegal offshore gambling operators. Most of the reforms are expected to take effect on 1 January 2027 if the legislation is approved.
Opposition communications spokeswoman Sarah Henderson called for the bill to be reviewed by a Senate inquiry. She said:
While we are continuing to work through the details in good faith, it is no surprise we have concerns about the government’s bill.
Independent MP Andrew Wilkie was more critical, arguing that the government should replace the legislation with stronger measures. He said:
I call on the government to put aside that rubbish bill that was tabled today.
Liberal MP Simon Kennedy also described the proposal as a concession to the gambling industry, claiming it falls short on advertising restrictions, inducements and protections for younger people.
The bill will now proceed through parliament, where lawmakers are expected to debate possible amendments and whether the proposed restrictions should be expanded.
